base64ToString does not work as expected in each case

My flow has a HTTP request trigger and as part of the request I get a header.

Within the header I have a Bearer token I want to decode:

Lars_Martin_0-1594978364855.png

At base64decode.org my base64 string is properly decoded:

Lars_Martin_1-1594978436731.png

When I try the same within a Flow it does not work:

Lars_Martin_2-1594978483956.png

Does anybody know if the base64ToString function has some restrictions as I cannot find anything in the documentation.

Thank you in advance

Lars

I used both Encode and Decode options in https://www.base64decode.org/ site and found the symbol = is missing at the end of the base64 code.

Please give a try with following code:

Created a sample and checked the conversion worked fine for me.

Few thoughts:

1. I am thinking some characters may be missing at the end while copying and pasting. Can you please ensure you got all the whole code without missing any characters.

2. I recommend using Notepad to avoid any unnecessary characters while copying.

3. Also, can you place whole base64 code in another compose action "Compose1" and use the output of the compose "Compose1" within base64toString(oupts('Compose1')) ?

Just some thoughts.

Hi Krishna,

thank you for your thoughts.

My test flows is configured as follows:

Lars_Martin_0-1594988059672.png

The variable is set to the bearer token I could capture in a flow with HTTP request trigger:

Lars_Martin_1-1594988119998.png

In a first step I split the token in the three parts.

Lars_Martin_2-1594988154507.png

In the next step I determine the middle part as this base64 string contains the data I'm looking for:

Lars_Martin_3-1594988199096.png

In the last step I try to decode the base64 string:

base64ToString(outputs('determine_the_middle_token'))

Lars_Martin_4-1594988281705.png

The last even fails when I enter the bas64 string directly in the base64 function:

base64ToString('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')
The same base64 string could be successfully decoded at base64decode.org. So I'm wondering what is going wrong in my flow.

@Lars_Martin

I am also getting the same error.

I found couple of forum posts:

This is something I was already wondering about.

Therefore I built the test flow shown above and used a string variable with my bearer token to ensure it's a really only a string.

@rsaikrishna

Thank you for the hint. Indeed it was the missing piece and now works.

It seems that I always need to append "=" at the end of the token to get it working.

Hi ,

I am facing similar issue. but this is strange.

I am trying to send mail with Approve/Reject button to some random people and get response from them.

When authenticating the response, i am trying to get values from bearer token using base64tostring() function

When i append single equals ('=') at the end, it is working for few people. But Throwing errors for others when they try to approve/reject.

When i append double equals ('=='), it is working for people those who got errors with single equals '=' and not for others.

Can anyone help on this?

Thanks, Nandha

Hi all,

does base64toString() function is always used with outputs from Compose actions? and which args accept? and what is this function for?

FYI: I was running into this issue and could not find a solution online, and it would work sometimes but not others. I ended up working through and finding out the cause.

Base64 strings have to have a length that is divisible by 4, if the length is not divisible by 4, they append '=' as a placeholder on the end of the string until it is divisible by 4. Microsoft Flow's decodeBase64() does not automatically append these =, so you have to check if mod(length(variables('X')) == 0, if not, append '=' to the string until it is. Then you can decode the string.

AllenTheGreat_0-1642185552406.png

This works flawlessly! Thank you.

The formula is: mod(length(variables('Your_token')), 4) is equal to 0

The best way to make sure you know what's going on in the News & Announcements, to blogs you follow, or forums and galleries you're interested in is to subscribe! These subscriptions ensure you receive automated messages about the most recent posts and replies. Even better, there are multiple ways you can subscribe to content and boards in the community! (Please note: if you have created an AAD (Azure Active Directory) account you won't be able to receive e-mail notifications.)   Subscribing to a Category  When you're looking at the entire category, select from the Options drop down and choose Subscribe.     You can then choose to Subscribe to all of the boards or select only the boards you want to receive notifications. When you're satisfied with your choices, click Save.     Subscribing to a Topic You can also subscribe to a single topic by clicking Subscribe from the Options drop down menu, while you are viewing the topic or in the General board overview, respectively.     Subscribing to a Label Find the labels at the bottom left of a post. From a particular post with a label, click on the label to filter by that label. This opens a window containing a list of posts with the label you have selected. Click Subscribe.     Note: You can only subscribe to a label at the board level. If you subscribe to a label named 'Copilot' at board #1, it will not automatically subscribe you to an identically named label at board #2. You will have to subscribe twice, once at each board.   Bookmarks Just like you can subscribe to topics and categories, you can also bookmark topics and boards from the same menus! Simply go to the Topic Options drop down menu to bookmark a topic or the Options drop down to bookmark a board. The difference between subscribing and bookmarking is that subscriptions provide you with notifications, whereas bookmarks provide you a static way of easily accessing your favorite boards from the My subscriptions area.   Managing & Viewing Your Subscriptions & Bookmarks To manage your subscriptions, click on your avatar and select My subscriptions from the drop-down menu.     From the Subscriptions & Notifications tab, you can manage your subscriptions, including your e-mail subscription options, your bookmarks, your notification settings, and your email notification format.     You can see a list of all your subscriptions and bookmarks and choose which ones to delete, either individually or in bulk, by checking multiple boxes.     A Note on Following Friends on Mobile Adding someone as a friend or selecting Follow in the mobile view does not allow you to subscribe to their activity feed. You will merely be able to see your friends’ biography, other personal information, or online status, and send messages more quickly by choosing who to send the message to from a list, as opposed to having to search by username.
