new look for Power Apps

We recently launched a preview of the new look for model driven app Power Apps. Details here As you try out the preview, please tell us what you think.  In the coming weeks we'll be talking more about how modern controls, using the Microsoft Fluent design system, will be coming to canvas apps, theming is also on the horizon (about time!).  We're keen to hear people's thoughts and feedback on all those topics here.

Many thanks

Ben

Hi @benapple,

First of all thank you for bringing this great enhancement to Power Apps! I am looking forward on what to come especially dark mode and theming 😃

I shared my thoughts in my blog. You can read them here: https://powerthomas.com/2023/02/05/new-look-and-feel-model-driven-apps-a-comparison-and-my-thoughts/

Hi @benapple,

Thank you for taking the time to gather feedback. Today I was notified on this LinkedIn message that the implementation of the Basic Textfield control is backwards then what it is supposed to be. The input fields should be white and the disabled fields should be grey. It's also different then how Custom Pages look.

See Fluent UI text field documentation and below for a snapshot:

I am just adding my vote for Ben's feedback. I can think of no other app/platform that I use where editable fields have a grey background but disabled ones have a white background. Grey is the cue to me that the control is disabled. It seems like this design has been chosen to avoid having a solid border like in the Fluent UI default theme shown in Ben's screenshot.

Edit columns or Edit filters are not applying a View. For example, when adding a filter to a view:

This brings up the normal Edit filters pane. Filter(s) can be added as usual

But upon hitting Apply the filters are not actually applied to the View. Further, when you go back to the Edit filters pane the filter criteria that was just added has been removed.

Hi Ben,   I also really like the new look and feel.

We experience that there is a lot of white space in the subgrid in a Form (to show related entities). For example: in the 'old version' max. 6 Workshop Participations were shown in the list.

lotharvdiessen_3-1675785527519.png

In the new version, it looks like 3 empty rows are displayed (to complete the 3 existing rows, and have 6).

Overall, I'm pleased with most of the changes. The new look and feel is a significant step in the right direction 👏 Also, I cannot wait for updated controls to come to canvas apps! Making beautiful canvas apps today takes a lot of time if you start with the current default components.

However, I agree with @BenDenBlanken: The distinction between disabled/locked fields and regular input fields in the preview version is counterintuitive. Still, just switching the two background colours won't solve it for me. I believe input fields, independent of the state, benefit from some visual cue or contrast to separate them from the background canvas.

The newest version of the Fluent UI input field documentation shows what I believe to be a much better solution: Components / Input - Default ⋅ Storybook (fluentui.dev). Until this is sorted out (which I assume will happen pretty quickly), I will not enable the new look for any of our customers just yet.

Thanks for reporting this @jwkruse . We have fixed this issue and change should be available in production geos in next 4-6 weeks. No user action needed as such.

Thanks,

Hemant

Thanks for giving us your thoughts on our latest UI preview! We really appreciate you taking the time to give us feedback.

We take all feedback to heart and will keep evaluating the designs to make sure they meet our users' needs. We hear you about the input fields looking disabled - that's valid feedback and a concern we are trying to balance all up with Power Apps forms design treatment. Although we can't promise to make every change that's suggested, your feedback is important to help us make things better for everyone and we’ll continue to evaluate these UI changes.

Thanks again for being a valuable part of our community. If there's anything else you'd like to chat about, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Hi @benapple ,

I'm not sure if this is related to this change but wanted to ask. I use the "Power apps grid control" for some of my apps views and since a couple of days it started giving an issue in which after going into a record and then out it stays "blank" and needs to be refreshed. Do you know if this may be related to this change or should I report it separately?

If I go into the app the information appears normal

ABrenes_0-1676645594058.png

But then if I go into a record

ABrenes_1-1676645621385.png

And then go back this happens:

ABrenes_2-1676645643790.png

And it looks like this only happens to the Power apps grid control.

Thank you for any assistance or guide you can provide.
